Some of you have been asking about the songs Laura and Micky played on the recent Liverpooljazz podcast.
The first song we sang was Desafinado, which literally means “out of tune”. It’s a favourite of ours as it was recorded as a response to critics who claimed that bossa nova was a “new genre for singers who couldn’t sing”! The version recorded by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd in 1962 was a smash hit and brought bossa nova to the attention of the world.
The second song is called Danca da Solidao. Originally by Paulinho da Viola (a singer and composer rooted deeply in samba), we like this song because it shows beautifully how bossa nova and MPB (Brazilian popular music) won over this musician and influenced the samba style.
A big thank you to Steve Faragher from Liverpool Community Radio for sending us the two tracks.
And thanks again to the Liverpooljazz podcast for having us on the show as guests and allowing us to sing and play – it’s what we live to do!
